Senior Jae Shin, known for her exceptional shooting ability, which led her to the team lead in scoring last season, will head from the Northwest to the Southeast next season to play college ball at the Univeristy of Louisiana-Monroe.
The school, located in Northeast Louisiana, plays in the Sun Belt Conference and is a division one school. Their girls’ basketball team went 16-15 last season and boasts a roster primarily made up of athletes from the region, including Louisiana, Texas and Arkansas.
Shin highlighted the fact that ULM was the only D1 school on her list as the main reason she chose to head to Monroe. The town does provide some concerns though: “It’s super different from Mercer Island…The people are different, the area’s different,” said the hot shooting senior. While the area may be unfamiliar to her, Shin has reason to be excited to join the Lady Warhawks. After losing three of their shooters from last season, Shin has a chance to follow MI alum Hannah Lilly’s footsteps and have an impressive freshman year.
With her commitment, Shin joins the developing list of athletes to head off to the NCAA from the class of 2011. Others include:
Lauren Poli: NC State women’s swimming
Charlie Kern: William and Mary men’s golf
Matt McNamara: Concordia University men’s soccer
David Lee: California Lutheran Univ. men’s soccer
Emilio Gojio: Spokane Falls Community College
