Lakeridge Tank Team March 21

LAST WEEK!!!!!
Our water quality tests showed a build up of nitrates now that the alevin have fully developed their digestive systems and are us and swimming, hunting for food. We added a water conditioner called Prime to try to neutralize the nitrates and keep the water safe. Nitrates come from fecal matter (poop) or fertilizers and can be a real danger to wild rivers as well as aquariums. We hope the Prime works, otherwise we will have to do a water exchange.
Our fish are now officially fry or parr. They look silvery with vertical black stripes going down their backs. SInce they are up and hunting, we started feeding them today (freeze dried brine shrimp —SMELLY!!!) . We set up an automatic feeder and need to keep an eye on it to make sure it is working properly.
We are worried about a few fish that may be late bloomers or may be very sick. They still have yolk sacks that look bloody and are staying down at the bottom. We hope they make it, but fear they are dieting. We plan to release all the fish at Clark Beach next Thursday, March 29th as long as the water is safe and our salmon are healthy.
Thanks for following our blog!
ONE MORE WEEK!

Lakeridge Tank Team March 14 Up & Swimming!
By jhovind | March 14, 2012
Our alevin are up and swimming now, so they have reached the parr or fry stage of the salmon life cycle. They still have some red yolk sack showing. We will start feeding them next week.
A patttern we notice is that there were lots of dud/dead in the egg stage, fewer dead in the alevin stage, and no dead as they started the fry stage.
******Keep watching for the next few weeks. ******
*****We plan to release them right before Spring Break! *****

All of our salmon are swimming. YAY! They all have dark almost black stripes on their backs called parr marks. YOu can no longer see their yolk sacks, just a tiny bulge and thin red line along their bellies. One fish’s back is crooked. It is struggling to swim but cannot get off the bottom of the tank. It may not survive. We ran out of test strips, but the water quality looks good. We had to remove more mold from the bottom of the tank and took out the plants to help reach it. We started feeding the fish over the weekend so there is now an automatic feeder on top of the tank.

LR Tank Team Feb. 29th

Our fish are starting to swim a little but are still mostly resting near the gravel at the bottom and corners of the tank. Their yolk sacks are starting to look silver and are disappearing. The silver goes about half way down the side now. Their backs are getting darker, and you can start to see clear lines called parr marks.
There are only a few duds or dead fish we had to get out this week. The water quality is great! All chemical tests were in the safe zones.

WM tank team February 28th

Our fish are up and swimming — YEA! They are about an inch long. They are mostly silver, but their back is darker and they have a bit of a stripe pattern going down their sides. They still have a little yolk sack left, but we will probably start feeding them next week.
None of the fish are hiding under rocks anymore, but they do tend to hover near the plants now.
One little alevin still has its yolk sack and was hiding way at the back. We thought he was dead, but he’s still alive — just small!
Mold started growing on the bottom of your tank — white and gooey — YUCK! We removed as much as we could.

The nitrates are very high so we have to change the water or else the salmon might die. Also the salmon’s egg sacks are almost gone and most of the salmon are starting to swim.
Sorry For The Short Story We Will Have More Next Week

LR Tank Team Feb 8th

We had to take a lot of duds and dead alevin out. The water is a little too cold so we turned up the thermostat. We also added some water. The living alevin are medium gray. Their yolk sacks are getting smaller and growing veins like red lines along the sides. They are still building there digestive systems. Those that do not grow their system right or have their yolk sacks damaged will not survive.
They are not good swimmers yet. They are hiding everywhere they can but they are making it good. We hope to see more improvement. The tank is doing good.
