Monday:  Collect reading questions. Discuss larger issues about the novel.  Homework — [You will have 30 minutes at the start of class tomorrow to read 10 pages.  If that's not enough time, please start the reading tonight.] Define vocabulary Voc #2

Tuesday: 30 minutes reading time, pages 129-139; discuss reading; vocabulary sentences. Homework — Read pages 139 to 151.  Take notes on each person at the bottom of page 151 (you’ll have to look them up) and what he’s known for.

Wednesday: No class.

Thursday: What is the purpose/efficacy of this human library? What’s Bradbury’s message? Do you agree with him? Homework — read pages 152 -165.

Friday:  Reading questions. Homework — study for vocabulary quiz on Tuesday; come in with the image and the written piece for the “Are We Lost or Not?” assignment.

Monday: Read and discuss “Dover Beach”. Homework — Read pp. 97 – 110 (Oh, and there might be a reading quiz tomorrow.)

Tuesday: Discuss reading (and look at the homework from yesterday, okay?); image, simile, metaphor; start paragraph using image, simile, and metaphor. [The definitions are in the comments section.]  Homework — Write a paragraph about your favorite place using all three examples of figurative language. Minimum 8 sentences, typed and proofread.

Wednesday: No class.

Thursday: Read around of paragraphs. Homework — Read pages 113 – the break on page 129.

Friday: Questions on reading.  Homework — none.

Monday: p. 57 – 61, Beatty’s lecture — What are his main points? Do you agree with them?  Homework — Write a response to the two questions from class.  Your response must be at least one paragraph (6-8 sentences) long.

Tuesday: Read around; finish vocabulary sentences; read to the end of part one; study vocabulary. Homework — Study for vocabulary quiz.

Wednesday: No class.

Thursday: Vocabulary quiz; discuss Faber. Homework — Read pages 82 – 96. Take notes about what we learn about the values of Myrtle and her friends. Be specific. Bullet points are fine as long as they are detailed.

Friday: Discuss Myrtle and friends. Homework — none.

Monday: Prepare for debate. Homework — Prepare your role.

Tuesday: Debate, then prepare for test.  Quotes for ID Test on Of Mice and Men Homework — Study for test.  **If you did not speak in the debate or spoke very little, you may write a response to points and opinions raised in the debate in the comments section here. Remember to include all of the elements of higher order participation (described in the rubric). Please write your comment by next Monday (cut off is midnight Sunday) Minimum 200 words.**

Wednesday: No class.

Thursday: Test.

Tuesday: Discuss the symbolism of Candy’s dog’s life and death; identify central questions/themes that Steinbeck has raised so far; read and discuss “To a Mouse”; read pages 84-01 (Where do your sympathies lie? Why?). Homework — Read the article from Chimes about Of Mice and Men. With which of the viewpoints expressed do you agree? With which do you disagree? Why? OMAM Article

Wednesday: No class.

Thursday: Discuss Chimes article in small groups; divide and receive roles for debate on Tuesday. Homework — Read page 91 – the end of the novel.

Monday: Submit questions and then discuss them; review chapter 1 vocabulary. Voc ch 1    Homework — Read pp. 38 – 54; study for vocabulary quiz on Thursday.

Tuesday: Answer questions in small groups; review chapter 2 vocabulary. Here are the definitions; please print them out and bring them to class tomorrow Chapter 2 . Homework — Complete reading and complete Exercise 1 at Grammar Bytes (that means read the instructions about fused sentences and comma splices, then do the exercise). Be sure to print out and complete the handout associated with the exercise for verification. Comma splices and fused sentences, ex. 1

Wednesday: review ch. 2 vocabulary; read pp. 55 – 65; review fused sentences and comma splices. Homework — Study for vocabulary quiz.

Thursday: Vocabulary quiz; **bring comma splice worksheet if you didn’t yesterday!!**; review fused sentences and comma splices discuss the reading and the American Dream. Homework — Read pp. 66 – 83.

Week of 3/19

Monday:  Final revision of Lord of the Flies paragraphs. Homework — Print out Of Mice and Men study guide 9; bring in revised, polished final draft of Lord of the Flies paragraphs.

Tuesday: Submit paragraphs; return Lord of the Flies; check out Of Mice and Men; receive and discuss Of Mice and Men literary terms; introduction to the Dust Bowl; start to define vocabulary Of Mice and Men Vocabulary 9 ; start to read chapter 1 aloud. Homework — Finish chapter 1 and complete the questions. {Check back on this after class on Tuesday. This assignment may change, depending upon how much we complete in class.}

Wednesday: No class.

Thursday: Discuss chapter 1 and related themes. Homework — None.

Friday: Start to read chapter 2; discuss friendship and its effect on behavior. Homework — Read chapter 2. Type up five questions. Three should be factual, 2 discussion. Bring in the chapter 1 vocabulary and definitions.

Week of 3/12

Monday: I was out today.  Your sub asked you to bring in another paragraph rough draft tomorrow.  Please do.  I’ll post the remainder of the schedule tomorrow when I have my plan book.

Tuesday: You should have three completed draft paragraphs at this point.  We will continue to work on those paragraphs for tomorrow. Begin to write the draft of your fourth paragraph, and then complete it for Thursday.

Wednesday: No class. Work on your paragraphs.

Thursday: Drafts of all paragraphs due.  Lesson on how to include quotes. Homework — Checklist on spelling, word choice.

Friday: Read through paragraphs with checklists for sentence structure, word choice, structure.  Homework — Revise, polish paragraphs to submit Monday. Be sure to read your paragraphs through using the Commonly misused words sheet.

Tuesday: Work on questions on chapter 11; discuss chapter 11; work on elements sheet; discuss final LotF writing assignment. Homework — Finish elements sheet and read chapter 12.

Wednesday: No class.

Thursday: Work on questions on chapter 12; discuss elements sheets; discuss end of the novel. Homework — select questions for final writing assignment. **Bring a flash drive on Friday.

Friday: Start to work on final writing assignment. **I may push this up a day so we can discuss the end of the novel more. ** Homework — Write drafts (complete but for editing & revising) of 2 paragraphs for Monday.
